This new guide includes American history, literature, poetry and recitation for Year 4 for one year.
 
It differs from Program 1: Lesson Guide for Lower School B in that it is designed for Year 4 students only as well as having Natural History, Geography and British History removed. This makes for a less bulky and overwhelming guide. Use this guide to create your own curriculum at the website. Add in geography, British History and Natural History for a complete year. This guide aligns with Pre-17th Century Lesson Guide: Years 2-3. Many, many books are shared between these two guides. 
 
Year Four students will share some books with younger students, but will also have books of their own. The Discovery of the Americas by Betsy and Giulio Maestro gives Year Four students more details of the early development of America, with Before Columbus: The Leif Eriksson Expedition by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel further expanding on these ideas. Hiawatha and the Peacemaker by Robbie Robertson is paired with their study of Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha, giving students a historical reference along with a literary one. Year Four students will additionally read Children of the Longhouse by Joseph Bruchac and Morning Girl by Michael Dorris independently. 
 
Some literature and poetry selections give students a taste of the medieval time period -one which fits within the broad scope of this study. Students will enjoy medieval legends, Norse mythology and books which feature knights, princesses, castles and dragons! Add on the medieval section of Our Island Story: A Guided Study for British History to fully expand on the study of this time period.
