This new guide includes American history, literature, poetry and recitation for Year 4 for one year.

It differs from Program 2: Lesson Guide for Lower School B in that it is designed for Year 4 students only as well as having Natural History, Geography and British History removed. This makes for a less bulky and overwhelming guide. Use this guide to create your own curriculum at the website. Add in geography, British History and Natural History for a complete year. This guide aligns with 16th-18th Century Lesson Guide: Years 2-3. Many, many books are shared between these two guides.

Year Four students will share some books with younger students, but will also have books of their own. Exploration and Conquest: The Americas after Columbus; The New Americas: Colonial Times and Struggle for a Continent: The French and Indian Wars by Betsy and Giulio Maestro give Year Four students more details of the early development of America, tracking from the establishment of its first settlements, then onward as colonies and later as a fledgling nation. Year Four students will additionally read Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin by Marguerite Henry, Benjamin Banneker: Pioneering Scientist by Ginger Wadsworth and Amos Fortune, Free Man by Elizabeth Yates independently.

Students will study American History from approximately 1500-1799 with a focus on Colonial America and the American Revolution, emphasizing such historical persons as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Phillis Wheatley and such events as The Boston Tea Party. Some literature and poetry selections give students a taste of the 16th-18th century time period -one which fits within the broad scope of this study. Students will enjoy an introduction to Shakespeare, William Blake, Greek mythology, selections from The Book of Nature Myths and classic children's literature such as Understood Betsy, Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, The Poet's Dog and more! Add on the 16th-18th Century section of Our Island Story: A Guided Study for British History to fully expand on the study of this time period.
