This new guide includes American history, literature, poetry and recitation for Year 5 and/or Year 6 for one year.
Use this guide as a base to create your own curriculum at the website. Add in geography, British History, Citizenship, Natural History & Science and the Arts for a complete year. This guide aligns with 16th-18th Century Lesson Guide: Years 2-3 and 16th-18th Century Lesson Guide: Year 4.
Year 5/6 students will study this time period with Genevieve Foster's World of William Penn and George Washington's World. Both books combined focus on who and what contributed to the early development of America, tracking from the establishment of its first settlements, then onward as colonies and later as a fledgling nation. Simultaneously, students will learn of what was happening all over the world during the same time period. Year Five and Six students will independently read at least 2 novels from a selected list as well as join Year Four in reading A Voice of Her Own, a biography of Phillis Wheatley.
Students will study American History from approximately 1500-1799 with a focus on Colonial America and the American Revolution, emphasizing such historical persons as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Phillis Wheatley and events such as the American Revolution. World figures such as Charles II, Qianlong, George III, Catherine II of Russia, Maria Antionette and Napoleon are studied along with world events such as the Seven Years' War, French Revolution and much more.
Students will enjoy selected works as well as A Midsummer Night's Dream from Shakespeare. William Blake, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Phillis Wheatley, Greek mythology, selections from Washington Irving and classic children's literature such as The Children of the New Forest, Treasure Island, The Little White Horse, and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland will also be read.
Add on the 16th-18th Century section of Our Island Story: A Guided Study for British History to fully expand on the study of this time period.
